Day Trip 1 - Insight

Spend The Day In Unawatuna

Unawatuna is one of the most buzzing locations in the South Coast. With an array of incredible and mysterious historical sites, as well as delicious restaurants, cafes, markets, and more. Unawatuna is a
golden sand beach with a fantastic surf break, and over 10 diving spots nearby. We’ll take you to
the best sightseeing spots in Unawatuna, or simply a stroll up and down Beach Road. Some spots
we recommend include:

RUMASSALA HILL

Located on the famous Unawatuna peninsula, Rumassala Hill is a massive hill which seems oddly out of place when taking the surrounding landscape into consideration. Legend details that during the Rama – Rawana war Rama’s brother Luxhmana, was injured and Hanuman was sent to the Himalayas to fetch medicinal herbs. Hanuman forgot the name of the herb, but he brought a chunk of the peak containing many herbs. However, the mountain fragment slipped and broke into five pieces of which one fell to Rumassala. Climbing to the top of Rumassala Hill gives you one of the most scenic views of the island.

JAPANESE PEACE PAGODA

The Peace Pagoda positioned on Rumassala Hill, overlooking Galle Fort, is a beacon of peace for people of all races and creeds. Built by Japanese Buddhist monks over 15 years ago, with the intention was to build pagodas in areas of conflict around the world, and unite all people in their search to bring world peace. It is recommended to dress modestly out of respect whilst visiting the
pagoda.

JUNGLE BEACH

Only a short drive from the popular Unawatuna Beach is a small alcove of Jungle Beach. Pristine sand and clear sparkly waters enables great snorkelling vision. Stop by on your way back to Angel Beach with a jump in the ocean to cool down after a tour around Unawatuna.

Exploring Galle Fort by Foot

Galle, 119km from Colombo, is a major coastal area situated at the tip of the South Western coast of Sri Lanka, with amazing hot and humid weather and an abundance of beautiful beaches in the nearby vicinity. Our tour of the Galle Fort explores this magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site, which contains a unique mix of Dutch, Portuguese and British history. It is said to be the island’s last major link to its colonial past - with the many Portuguese and Dutch remains in the area. The Fort gives you colonial and historic charm with an eclectic range of low rise European architecture across a lace of narrow lanes and alleyways. While you tour the Galle Fort, be sure to cover some of the important highlights within it such as the thick-walled ramparts which withstood the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. You will be able to explore a variety of historic sites listed below, as well as a
plethora of cafe's, restaurants, vintage shops, chic boutiques and art galleries.

THE DUTCH REFORMED CHURCH

While at the Galle Fort, make your way to the Dutch Reformed Church. Originally built in 1640, the present building dates from 1752. Its floor is paved with gravestones from Dutch cemeteries, while other impressive features of the iconic landmark includes the organ and an imposing pulpit made from calamander wood and topped by a grand hexagonal canopy. While there, you may encounter the friendly caretaker who will likely point out the carved wooden memorial dedicated
to a former Commander of Galle, Abraham Samlant.

GALLE NATIONAL MUSEUM

Making your way through the Galle Fort you are sure to come across the Galle National Museum. This den of history is located in the oldest Dutch building within the Fort premises. The museum was opened to the public on 31st March 1986 and houses a wide range of archaeological and anthropological objects inherited in the Southern region. You will also find a collection of traditional masks used in various rituals, a collection of ornamental objects made up of turtle shells, ancient
wooden carvings and a beeralu collection, among many more ancient artefacts.

THE HISTORICAL MANSION

Another gem of a tourist attraction at Galle Fort is the privately-owned museum in the Galle Fort. This is one spot which draws attention from travellers from all over the world. The Historical Mansion Museum reflects the distinct essence of Southern Sri Lanka and exhibits a collection of miscellaneous items ranging from colonial artefacts to other antiquities. When there you will also witness a gem shop where you will be able to witness live embroidery presentations as well as the process of cutting and polishing magnificent sapphires. The highlight of the entire mansion has to be the central courtyard – here you will be able to see various stone sculptures, Chinese porcelain items and several objects from the colonial past.

GALLE FORT LIGHTHOUSE

As you walk to the southern end of the Galle Fort, you will stumble across The Galle Fort Lighthouse which is one of the oldest lighthouses in the country. It was initially built in 1848 during the British colonial period and then was rebuilt in 1939. The lighthouse is an exemplary masterpiece by the renowned architect, Geoffrey Bawa and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you make your way to the top of the lighthouse, you are able to have a panoramic view of the
complete area and Indian Ocean, making this a prime spot for travellers, who prefer an evening stroll.

NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM

Another iconic landmark located within the confines of the Galle Fort is the National Maritime Museum. This museum is housed in a cavernous warehouse built by the Dutch all the way back in 1671 and is a site for many a traveller. It serves as a knowledge centre for the country’s rich history of seafaring and its marine bio- diversity, with interesting exhibits from both aspects. As you
continue to explore the museum you will also see a collection of traditional wooden craft from various designs and even a model of a typical trading ship used by the Dutch East India Trading Company.

MEERA MOSQUE

Built in 1909, this is the main and biggest mosque of Galle. Here, you will witness, its impressive white walled structure alongside the ocean. The mosque is also a testament of the multi-cultural society within the walls of the Galle Fort and is a landmark which is truly beautiful. The décor of stained glass on the inside, mixed with picturesque tiles on the floor paves the way for a gorgeousinterior.

The below activities can be combined as a day trip to discover the hidden gems of our area. Each of these activities have been handpicked by our team out of their inside knowledge and love of our picturesque location. We recommend this tour for travellers who seek a more immersive experience with local communities.

1. SWIM WITH TURTLES ON MIHIRIPENNA BEACH

Mihiripenna beach is just after the rope swing in Dalawella, and only a short walk down the beach. It is the perfect spot for sunbathing and relaxing with a book. If you’re on the lookout for a picturesque beach with turquoise waters and white sand, then you’ve found it. There is a natural 'lagoon’ formed and enclosed via a coral reef, home to many turtles. If you do visit these beautiful
animals, please do not disturb them in their habitat and watch them for afar!
The turtle sanctuaries in the area are a must see. Turtles are usually saved from plastic and other human-based stuff that causes them to get stuck. You can see turtles missing legs, or shells are broken etc, all of which are being rehabilitated. It’s like a little hospital for turtles! If you’re lucky you might get to see some baby turtles.

2. VISIT THE DOG CARE CLINIC

This is one of the more unique things to do in our area. It’s one of the only self-funding rescue centre for street dogs in Sri Lanka. You get to meet some unique Sri Lankan street dogs, and of course lots of puppies. It’s only about a 1km trip from Angel Beach, and a beautiful drive inland.

3. THALPE BEACH ROCK POOLS

Thalpe Beach is one of the most popular beaches on Sri Lanka's south coast and unlike any beach you've ever visited before. What makes Thalpe Beach so unique are the rectangular rock pools carved into the long-dead coral reef at the shoreline that was once used by fishermen

4. DALAWELLA ROPE SWING

We’ve all seen it: the iconic picture of Unawatuna. The “coconut swing” at Dalawella beach are our neighbours, only a 350m walk down the beach from us. You can spot people swinging into sunset from our property.

Around the island

Our island is the ideal place to lose and find yourself. Unravel the mysteries behind ancient ruins, spend your day building sandcastles on a golden beach or dive into the island’s wilderness. These are only are some of our suggestions, but there are an endless amount of magical places to visit. Our Front Office team are happy to offer more suggestions.

ARUGAM BAY

One of the more unique areas to visit, Arugam Bay is located on the East Coast of Sri Lanka in the dry zone. Known for its laid back vibes, great coffee shops, parties and surf. There are many surf breaks located in Arugam Bay itself, as well as neighbouring areas, for beginners to advanced. The town borders Kumana National Park, next to Yala, as well as the ancient Kudumbigala Monastery.
It is recommended to visit during May to October to ensure the best waves and weather.

ELLA

For those who need a bit of a break from the salty breeze and humidity, Ella is a great choice. Boasting a range of activities and things to do from visiting Ravana’s cave, the Nine Arches Bridge, zip-line through the hills, to treks up Little Adam’s Peak or swimming in waterfalls. Ella is a small but buzzing tourist town full of fantastic bars, restaurants and shops.

KANDY

Discover the most revered city on the island. Dive into the hub of Sri Lanka’s culture, history and heritage. Towered by lush mountains of rugged forest and tea plantations, Kandy lies nestled on a plateau in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. Visit the holiest temple on the island, Sri Dalada Maligawa; also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, believed to hold a sacred tooth
relic of Lord Buddha and worshipped by Buddhists around the globe. Walk through the scented pathways of The Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya and admire the vibrant variety of flora that thrives within the park. Trek through Udawattakele Forest Reserve, located right above the Royal Palace as you unravel the secrets and legends behind the city of Kandy and history.

KATARAGAMA

Embark on a journey to experience Sri Lankan religion and culture by visiting the pilgrimage town of Kataragama. This town is one that is sacred to Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims and is the home of a sylvan shrine dedicated to God Skanda. During the month of July/August the town comes alive for its annual festival where a large number of individuals from different religions converge to take
part in the festivities, letting you experience the festival as well.

NUWARA ELIYA

Escape to the hills of the island and embrace the serenity of Nuwara Eliya. Surrounded by lush highlands of tea estates and rich forests, Nuwara Eliya is a popular little town in Sri Lanka idyllically located at the base of a mountain. Walk through the quiet streets or admire the famed cascading waterfalls as it adds a stark contrast against the verdant backdrop of peaked silhouettes. Enjoy a warm cup of freshly brewed Ceylon tea in a blossoming, colourful garden or trek to the tallest peaks in the area. The town is blessed with a colder climate, compared to other parts of the country. The climate also plays a major role in producing fresh vegetables and fruits that are only found in colder parts of the world. Many of the existing buildings and structures carry heavy influences and designs from the British era.

RATHNAPURA

Rathnapura is the city of gems in South Western Sri Lanka at the foot of Adam’s Peak, and if you are a lover of all things sparkling, then it is definitely a place that you should visit on your holiday. The city is famed for its exotic gem collection and for owning one of the oldest pathways up Adam’s Peak. Back in the day, Rathnapura was famously known as a trading centre for its wealth of gems.

SIGIRIYA

Sigiriya is another UNESCO World Heritage Site found in Sri Lanka and was once nominated as the 8th Wonder of the World. Called by many names including “The Lion Rock” for its initial name of “Sinhagiri”, Sigiriya is located near the town of Dambulla and is a colossal column of rock nearly 200m high. It was a royal citadel for 10 years when fortified by an ancient King of Sri Lanka. When visiting this iconic landmark, pay very close attention to the architectural and irrigational technologies of Sigiriya, such as the Water Gardens – this is something that to this day baffles modern engineers.

If you do visit these beautiful animals, please do not disturb them in their habitat and watch them for afar!

Visit the holiest temple on the island, Sri Dalada Maligawa; also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, believed to hold a sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha and worshipped by Buddhists around the globe.

During the month of July/August the town comes alive for its annual festival where a large number of individuals from different religions converge to take part in the festivities, letting you experience the festival as well.
